Bengal Facts

Where do Bengals come from?

A Bengal is a unique breed of feline resulting from the crossing of the Asian Leopard Cat  ( ALC ) with an  Abyssinian ( gold or brown) or Burmese (silver or white). You get the wild look and beauty of a Leopard Cat but in pet form. The first generation offspring ( F 1 ), is the result of breeding an Asian Leopard Cat with a pedigree cat. First Generation ( F 1's )  offspring usually do not make good pets because of their wild heritage. This would also include the F2's (second generation) and F3's ( third generation). An F4 ( forth generation ) and beyond at this point in the pedigree is considered the Standard Breed Type  ( SBT ), and is considered to be a pedigree Bengal. The SBT Bengal  is recognized for championship competition by the TICA and most International Domestic Cat Associations.
From about three weeks of age until about 4 months, kittens have a fuzzy look to them that blurs their markings and affects their color. This is known as the "fuzzies" and it will gradually disappear allowing their markings and beautiful coat to begin to develop.  A Bengals markings can take up to a year or sometimes longer to completely develop. Bengals are very friendly and lovable when socialized properly.

Immunization

It is not recomended that you give your bengal cat the FIV/Feluke or FIP imunizations as it can cause your bengal to develope signs and symptoms associated with these Diseases. Please follow this link to find out more about vacinating your bengal.

Diet

The higher the protein the better for these finiky felines. A raw diet is preferred but "4 Health" found at Tractor Supply stores offers grain free dry and canned foods that my bengals love to eat as well as raw beef, chicken & turkey.

Litter

Because Bengals are very tidy and are always cleaning their coats and paws; as well as trying to help you clean their litter boxes, it is advised to use an all natural  litter in their litter box. Bengals have a sensitive digestive track and ingested clay litter can  cause digestive issues. I use Equine pellets that I purchase in 40 pound bags at my local Tractor Supply Store.
